Man Arrested in Downtown Shooting that Injured Bystander
Police say surveillance footage captured the attack.

A 22-year-old man suspected in a shooting that injured a woman in downtown Oakland earlier this week was arrested this morning, according to Oakland police. Police said Cervando Jessie Sterling-Caldez was taken into custody with the help of San Francisco police on suspicion of assault with a deadly weapon.
The shooting took place in the 1300 block of Broadway shortly after 10:30 a.m. Tuesday during an argument between Sterling-Valdez and an unidentified man, police said. Surveillance footage captured the attack. The intended target of the shooting was not hit, but the gunfire struck a woman who was standing nearby. The woman was taken to a hospital, where she was reported to be in stable condition.
Police said a watch commander witnessed the shooting and pursued Sterling-Valdez into the 1400 block of Broadway, where he was last seen. The intended victim also fled the scene. Officers who canvassed the area were able to recover a firearm that may have been used in the shooting, along with other evidence, police said.
