Oakland Man, 31, Arrested in San Leandro on Suspicion of Auto Burglary

Police said a witness reported seeing the suspect smash the window of a Mazda RX-7 and take a backpack Monday night.

A 31-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of smashing the window of a car and stealing a backpack inside in San Leandro on Monday night, police said. The auto burglary was reported at 9:30 p.m. Monday in the 14100 block of East 14th Street, where a witness reported seeing the suspect smash the window of a Mazda RX-7 and take a backpack, according to police.

The witness called again shortly afterward to report seeing the suspect in the area of 142nd and Bancroft avenues, about a block away from the Mazda. Officers responded and arrested the man, identified as Oakland resident Alvin Chambers, police said. Chambers was allegedly in possession of the stolen backpack, which was later returned to its owner, police said.

“Teamwork led to the arrest of those responsible for these crimes,” police Lt. Robert McManus said in a statement. “Without committed officers, engaging community members, and support from those that we serve, we may not have such great results in reducing crime in San Leandro.”
