Man Dies After Struggle With Oakland Police
Police had blocked off the 2300 block of East 21st Street to investigate a report of a man in need of psychiatric assistance.

(Updates earlier story that offered no reason for the street closure.)
Bay City News -- A 53-year-old man died after struggling with police officers who
had detained him at a home in East Oakland early today for a psychiatric
evaluation, police said.
Police said officers went to a residence in the 2300 block of East
21st Street around 1:40 a.m. after a woman reported that there was a
disturbance inside her home.
According to police, the officers detained the man for a
psychiatric evaluation and tried to place him into a police vehicle but he
resisted, and during a struggle, the man and officers went to the ground and
the man became unresponsive.
Officers tried to resuscitate the man while waiting for paramedics
to arrive, but he was pronounced dead after being transported to a hospital,
police said.
Oakland police said that in accordance with their protocol, the
man's death is being investigated by the Police Department's homicide and
internal affairs divisions and the Alameda County coroner's bureau.
Streets near the home were blocked off while officers responded to
the incident, police said.
