Police Seek Additional Victims in Sex-For-Jobs Scam

Oakland police said Friday that they’re investigating a sex-for-employment scam in which one victim has been identified and could involve additional victims. Police said the suspect has been identified and is currently in custody on a parole violation while the investigation continues.

Authorities said the suspect has previous convictions in Southern California for victimizing other women with the same scam. Oakland police said they began their investigation in August, when they were contacted by a woman who said she had posted her resume on Craigslist and was contacted by a man claiming to be an executive assistant of a well-known communications company.

The man told her that the company was interested in hiring her for the position and offered significant perks and asked her to submit her photograph, according to police. The woman later met the suspect, who now was claimed to be the vice president of the company, police said. The suspect then convinced the woman to have sex with him in exchange for consideration for the job, according to police. The woman later realized that the employment offer was a scam and called police, authorities said.

Police said the main is Hispanic, is in his late 40s and is about 5-foot-10 and 182 pounds with brown eyes and black hair. Police said they are concerned that other victims may have fallen prey to the man’s scam but haven’t come forward. Oakland police said additional victims or people with information about the case should call their special victims unit at (510) 238-3641.
