President Barack Obama Visits Piedmont Today

It's not just another Monday in Piedmont. Today, President Barack Obama comes to town.

The President will eat, greet, speak and have his photograph taken with about 60 guests — who paid $35,800 apiece for the privilege — at the Piedmont home of Quinn Delaney and Wayne Jordan. The will be held in the late afternoon; a media schedule provided by the White House press office says President Obama will be speaking there at 5:35 p.m.

For most Piedmont residents, the biggest impact will be for a six-hour stretch, from 2 p.m. to 8 p.m. "No parking" signs are posted on several streets, including portions of Moraga, Highland, Sheridan and Sea View avenues. According to the Piedmont Police Department, vehicles parked in posted areas will be towed.

Reactions from local residents have been mixed. "I'm very excited," wrote one Piedmont Patch reader, while someone else tweeted, "Gonna have to bike to work cus Obama is in town."

Among other tweets: "Obama is driving past my house tomorrow! that's cool i guess" and "So I was gonna pay to go to college for a semester, but then I decided I'd rather pay the $35000 to have dinner with him in piedmont instead."

Meanwhile, President Obama, who was originally scheduled to arrive in the Bay Area today, arrived at San Francisco International Airport at 8:15 p.m. Sunday. His campaign schedule changed to accommodate a visit Sunday in Aurora, Colo., to speak at a vigil for victims of a fatal shooting there during a midnight screening of the film The Dark Knight Rises Friday.

According to KCBS political reporter Doug Sovern, President Obama and his chief rival, Republican Mitt Romney — also in San Francisco for fundraisers — turned in for the night shortly after 9 p.m., presumably at separate hotels.

The White House schedule says the president will fly to Reno, Nev., this morning from San Francisco International Airport, leaving about 11:25 a.m. He is scheduled to return to the Bay Area in the afternoon, landing at about 2:50 p.m.

From there, President Obama will head to a private campaign event — also a $35,800 per person affair — at Oakland's Scottish Rite Temple at 3:20 p.m. That will be followed by the Piedmont event and by an appearance at Oakland's Fox Theatre, where he is scheduled to speak at 8 p.m.

The President will leave the Bay Area Tuesday morning, departing from SFO about 10 a.m. and heading to Portland, Ore., for more reelection campaign events.

Romney, meanwhile, had a busy Sunday in the Bay Area. He attended a private lunch in Woodside, followed by a reception at San Francisco's Fairmont Hotel and a dinner at a home in Pacific Heights.
