The Renaissance International Students Attending Montessori Model United Nations in Hangzhou, China October 2 through 8

Eighteen students from The Renaissance International School are attending the MMUN conference in China. They will also visit Shanghai.

The Renaissance International School (TRIS), an independent Montessori school, with campuses in Oakland and Piedmont, announces it is sending a student delegation to the Montessori Model United Nations (MMUN) in Hangzhou, China. The conference is being held October 2 through 8, 2017. A significant portion of the trip is being paid for through fundraising efforts.

Eighteen Upper Elementary students (grades 4 through 6) are attending the conference, accompanied by their teachers, Sophia Gigliotto, Hugo Brousse, Diego Salinas and Head of School, Leslie Hites.

“The MMUN conference offers incredible opportunities for our students’ social and personal growth,” says Leslie Hites. “The students learn cooperation and the art of compromise. They learn about other cultures and about themselves.”

In preparation for the conference, students conducted research in order to write position papers, and speeches that they will present at MMUN. Each student was assigned a country to study in depth and learn about its social justice and environmental problems. At debate sessions, they are able to communicate the policies and viewpoints of the country they represent, and debate on the merits of proposed solutions.

Following the conference, the students will visit and tour the following sites in Shanghai: Jade Buddha Temple; Shanghai Urban Planning Exhibition Hall; The Bund; Yuyuan Garden; Shanghai Museum; Qibao Town; and view a performance by the Shanghai Circus death-defiers. They will also take a full-day trip to Suzhou, the “Venice of the East.”
