Swim Club Complains About City's Secrecy

Recreation Director says city followed law in agenda item about report tonight by municipal aquatic consultant.

Look for a little chill in the air even as the Piedmont Recreation Commission discusses a heated swimming pool this evening.

The commission meets at 7:30 tonight at the City Council Chambers at .

As the city takes steps to assume management of the city pool from that has operated it for 46 years, invective has been part of the conversation.

On Wednesday, swim club board President Tim Rood e-mailed a message to Piedmont Patch decrying the city’s lack of transparency in notifying residents, and the club, about an agenda item tonight—a report by the city’s new municipal aquatics consultant, Jeff Eorio.

The correct agenda, mentioning the Eorio report, was only posted on the city website after a swim club member brought it to the city’s attention, said Rood.

“We urge interested parties to attend tonight’s hearing and speak out about the lack of transparency and minimal public notice associated with the pool transition,” wrote Rood.

“The agenda was posted according to law,” said Recreation Director Mark Delventhal Wednesday afternoon. “I do not want to have a discussion about Mr. Rood in any way, shape or form.”

Last month, the City Council and directed Delventhal to make preparations for the city to take over, effective July 1, 2011.
