Tear Gas Found in Trash Can

Authorities closed streets in the area and diverted traffic.

OAKLAND, CA-Law enforcement disposed of a tear gas grenade found in a trash can in East Oakland this morning, police said. Waste Management employees found the grenade in a trash can in the 1100 block of 61st Avenue, in the Lockwood Gardens neighborhood, just after 9 a.m., according to police.

Oakland police and firefighters responded along with the Alameda County sheriff’s bomb squad to determine whether it was a live grenade. Authorities closed streets in the area and diverted traffic. They quickly determined that it was a CS gas grenade, a munition used in crowd control, according to police.

The grenade was removed from the area. Streets have reopened and no one was injured, police said.
