Teen Arrested in Shooting Death of City Council President's Grandson

Torian Hughes, 17, was shot in the 900 block of Mandela Parkway at about 1:40 p.m. on Dec. 20.

A 15-year-old boy has been arrested and charged in the shooting death of the grandson of Oakland City Council president Lynette Gibson McElhaney last month, police said today.

Torian Hughes, 17, was shot in the 900 block of Mandela Parkway at about 1:40 p.m. on Dec. 20. Hughes, who briefly attended McClymonds High School and was in an independent study program as of last month, was taken to a hospital and pronounced dead a short time later, Oakland police said.

Police said today that the 15-year-old suspect was charged Monday by the Alameda County District Attorney’s Office for Hughes’ death. Prosecutors were not immediately available to confirm the charges. No other information is being released about the suspect because the case is being handled in juvenile court, police said. McElhaney wrote a post on Facebook following Hughes’ death, mourning her grandson’s passing.
