Bicyclist Killed in Train Collision Identified

Union Pacific officials said it appears the man went around the gates to try to get across the tracks before the train passed.

A male bicyclist killed Saturday afternoon in Richmond when he was struck by a freight train has been identified today by the Contra Costa County coroner’s office as 53-year-old Mark Guillory. The collision occurred at 1:50 p.m. Saturday, when Guillory, a Richmond resident, apparently tried to traverse tracks at the Cutting Boulevard crossing.

As he crossed, an eastbound Union Pacific freight train was approaching at 38 mph, according to the railroad company. Union Pacific officials said it appears Guillory went around the railroad crossing’s fully operational gates to try to get across the tracks before the train passed.

No one on the train was injured, according to Union Pacific.
