Bomb Squad Investigates Suspicious Hercules Package

If you see something, say something. Even if it turns out to be silly.

HERCULES, CA — Well, it was a good exercise.

A bomb squad responded on Tuesday afternoon to a suspicious device in Hercules that later proved to be harmless, police said.

Officers responded at 4:47 p.m. to a report of a suspicious cylinder-type object in the area of Railroad and Santa Fe avenues, according to police.

They arrived and saw the object was painted with a green and tan camouflage design, and it an eye loop at the top of it and a wire going up into the tree above it, police said.

Residents in the area, including on O'Neil Circle, were ordered to shelter in place while the Walnut Creek police bomb squad responded to investigate the device.

The bomb squad eventually determined it was a plastic jar with a screw-on lid and "geocache" items inside, police said.

Geocaching is a treasure hunting game people play using GPS-enabled devices to try to find a container hidden at a location.
