No Expectations: And Now for Something Completely Different...

Well, okay, I guess I'm starting over.

A few weeks ago, I headed to the gym for my scheduled appointment with my trainer. I arrived to find a notice at the front desk -- she was no longer working there, as of the day before.

Well, now what am I supposed to do?

I told the woman at the desk my situation, and after some initial confusion she said I could pick another trainer. Well, great. It was tough enough picking the first time, and I had already established something of a routine. I asked if there was another woman available, as I feel much less intimidated training with a woman.

Luckily, there was someone available, and she was able make some time for me. After a brief introduction, she had me run on a treadmill while she evaluated me.

This is going to be a very different program.

For starters, I will no longer be doing Crossfit-type workouts. My new trainer noticed the crookedness of my back (I was diagnosed with scoliosis when I was a teenager), and my horrible posture, and wants to work on building up my core upper-body strength to try to correct it.

She also conducts her workouts in the actual gym instead of the Crossfit area, which is a converted parking garage in the back of the building. Even though they did their best to enclose it, it was still awfully cold during the winter, which I had a difficult time with.  I like this much better.

Most of my workouts since have centered on resistance. I've done a lot of band work -- exercises with a giant rubber band. Harder than it sounds. I've also done "planking", which is putting your weight on your elbows and holding yourself parallel to the floor. Also harder than it sounds.

It's been slow going so far. She's taken on several clients as a result of the turnover, so I've only made it in once a week. Our schedules have finally shaken out, so we'll be starting twice-a-week workouts soon. Should be interesting to see how I take to the new approach.

Always good to shake things up now and then, right?
