No Expectations: Endorphins? Don't they play in Miami?

A myth and a hoax. Or maybe it's just me.

So I've been at this a while now, and I'm doing fine.  I dread going to the gym the whole day while I'm working, usually because I just want to go home and collapse.  But usually my workout isn't nearly as bad as I fear, and by the time it's over I think it was good that I went.

However, there's one thing that has still been escaping me.  I hear people speak of this hormone called an endorphin.  From what I understand, the body is supposed to produce this after very strenuous activity.  It is supposed to make you feel very good.

I honestly have no idea what they are talking about.

Maybe I'm not doing something right.  After every workout, instead of getting a "runner's high" or whatever it is, all I get is sweaty and tired.  No euphoria, no elevated mood, not even a smile.  It makes me wonder, is there such a thing as an endorphin deficiency?

I've done a scant amount of research, and there is a condition called Endorphin Deficiency Syndrome, but the symptoms I've read about are much more severe than anything I've ever encountered.  Is the runner's high only possible for those who run?  My wife runs all the time, and she gets grumpy when she can't.  Are those of us who don't doomed to a lifetime of sweat, aches, pains, and crankiness after each workout?

No matter.  All I can do is keep going and hope that one day I'll discover the "push-up high" or the "rowing high", or even the "squat high".  It could happen, right?
