No Expectations: The True Test

Will I still workout if someone doesn't make me?

There are two reasons why I've been able to stick with this workout program for so long -- scheduling appointments and reporting to someone. My motivation to continue still seems to be lacking, which is why these appointments are essential. I know if I don't make them, I won't go. Period.

Which makes this upcoming week so critical, and the first real test of my determination. My trainer is on vacation. I'm on my own.

So, will I go? I can sit in on the beginning Crossfit classes, which are roughly the same times as I usually go and involve a lot of the same workouts. But I don't know. I'm intimidated enough as it is, let alone having to do this in front of a bunch of people I don't know. And what if I suck? Not to be a snob, but this is the BEGINNING class. I've been doing this for about six months now. If I can't keep up, it would be humiliating. I'd much rather keep at my own pace than be measured against others.

Luckily, someone has come to my rescue, and she probably doesn't realize it. Coincidentally, my wife has just joined the gym, although reluctantly. She's not a gym person, either. She loves running, but the impact is becoming an issue and the exercise bike is a much better option.

So now I have a gym buddy. Sort of. I mean, I haven't done anything nearly as intense as my regular workouts so far this week. But, if my wife's going there anyway, I really don't have an excuse not to tag along. At least I'm showing up, which for me is a victory in itself.

Or maybe it's just a draw. I can live with that.
