District Sets Public Hearing on De Anza High School Building Name

The meeting is scheduled on Monday, October 6, 2014, at 6:30 p.m.

A public hearing to discuss a proposal to rename Building 10 at De Anza High School after former Alameda County Superior Court judge Henry Ramsey Jr., will take place on Monday, October 6, 2014, at 6:30 p.m. in the school library.

The late judge, who also served as Dean of the Howard University School of Law, was the father of West Contra Costa Unified School District Board of Education President Charles Ramsey.

De Anza High School is located at 5000 Valley View Road, Richmond.

A Board of Education subcommittee named at the October 1, 2014, meeting is tasked with considering name changes after receiving community input. Board Members Todd Groves and Randall Enos make up the committee.

Building 10 will be the home to the Law Academy at De Anza High School. The academy is a small learning community at the high school where students learn and advance together as a cohort, working together to prepare for the college or career of their choice.

The subcommittee will hear testimony and suggestions for the building’s name and make a recommendation to the full Board of Education. Board policy sets the following criteria for naming a building:

1. Individuals, living or deceased, who have made outstanding contributions to the WCCUSD or the educational community; or

2. Individuals, living or deceased, who have made contributions of state, national or worldwide significance.

3. Recognition of the geographic areas in which the school or building is located.

4. No school facility will be given the name of a commercial development unless the name existed in the area prior to the development.

5. The renaming of existing schools or major facilities shall occur only under extraordinary circumstances and after thorough study.
