Driver Mistakes Gas Pedal for Brake, Slams into Restaurant

The vehicle, a Nissan Sentra, jumped the curb and struck the lower glass windows of the restaurant, police said.

A driver sent his car into the glass facade of a restaurant at a shopping center on Monday afternoon in Hercules, police said. Officers responded at 2:40 p.m. to Choko’s Cuisine at Creekside Center in the 1500 block of Sycamore Avenue, police said.

The vehicle, a Nissan Sentra, jumped the curb and struck the lower glass windows of the restaurant, police said. It happened as the man attempted to park.

The 44-year-old man said he accidentally hit the gas pedal when he crashed into the restaurant, according to police. Neither the driver nor anyone in the business was injured.

Last month, a 70-year-old driver was trapped inside her car after crashing into a vacant building in a San Ramon shopping center and another driver was injured after her car crashed into Primary Eyecare Optometics in Castro Valley. In Livermore, an 80-year-old woman mistook the gas pedal for the brake accelerated into a gym hitting an exercise classroom, fatally injuring Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory executive Kathy Baker and injuring five others.
