Hercules Police: Spike in Smash-and-Grab Car Burglaries

HERCULES, CA — Hercules has seen a rash of auto burglaries this month, police said Thursday, counting 28 reports since Oct. 1.

Twenty-five of the reports were window smashes, while two were unknown entry and one involved an unlocked vehicle, according to police.

Most losses were electronics, including laptops and GPS, police said.

While several cases have occurred throughout the city this month, the most recent incidents happened on Tuesday, in which at least seven vehicles were burglarized in one night. Four burglaries occurred in the 500
block of Dutch Elm Drive, two in the 100 block of Beryl Court and one in the 100 block of Black Walnut Place, according to police.

The burglaries were discovered around 4 a.m. and appear to have been committed by the same suspect, police said.

Police have increased patrols, especially in the commercial shopping areas, golf courses and apartment complexes, but have asked the public not to leave valuables in their vehicles.
