Man, 31, Dies After Van Rear-Ends Car, Crashes into Wall in Pinole

Witnesses told police one of the drivers may have suffered from a medial issue just before the crash occurred.

A 31-year-old man died after his vehicle rear-ended a car and then crashed into a cinder-block retaining wall in Pinole this morning, according to police. Police responded at 8:30 a.m. to 1550 Fitzgerald Drive on a report of a traffic collision, police said.

According to its website, the address is the location of a Carl’s Jr. fast food restaurant. The man’s full-size passenger van rear-ended a silver sedan and then crashed into a cinder block retaining wall, Pinole police acting Lt. Matt Avery said. The driver was unresponsive and was transported to a hospital with life-threatening injuries. He died within a few hours, Avery said.

The driver and passenger of the car that was rear-ended were not injured, police said. Witnesses told police it seemed like the driver of the car that crashed suffered some sort of medical issue at the time of the collision. The man’s identity has not yet been released. Avery said the California Highway Patrol also responded and will be investigating the case.
