Investigators uncovered evidence that the shooting was possibly connected to a Nov. 2 shooting about 5 miles west on the same highway.

A man shot and killed while driving on Interstate Highway 80 in Pinole earlier this month has been identified as 25-year-old Anthonio Ragland of San Mateo, according to the Contra Costa County coroner’s office. Ragland was shot while driving an Audi east on the highway near Pinole Valley Road at about 11 p.m. on Nov. 10.

Someone in another car opened fire on him and his female passenger, according to the California Highway Patrol. CHP officers found them both suffering gunshot wounds. They were taken to a hospital, where Ragland was pronounced dead. The passenger’s injuries were not life-threatening.

In that shooting, a Hyundai Elantra was found stopped on the shoulder of Highway 80 near San Pablo Road at about 4:20 p.m. with a man inside suffering multiple gunshot wounds, according to the CHP.
