Pinole police apprehended a suspected auto burglar New Year’s Day and are looking for a second suspect who had led officers on a car chase, police said today. Officers responded to a report of an auto burglary in the 700 block of Fernandez Avenue just before 8 a.m. New Year’s Day, police said.

Officers found a vehicle with two broken windows, and while searching the area they saw a black male fleeing the scene. The suspect, later identified as 28-year-old Richmond resident Navarre Sangster, was detained and later arrested on suspicion of auto burglary. Another black male, described as heavy-set, was seen leaving the area in a black Mercedes-Benz at a high rate of speed.

Officers from the Pinole and Hercules followed the vehicle to an apartment in Rodeo, police said. The heavy-set black male was not located at the apartment, but during a subsequent search of the area authorities found property linked to the vehicle burglary. A search of the Mercedes turned up marijuana as well as stolen property linked to three recent auto burglaries in Marin County.
