Retired Hercules Police Officer Allegedly Fired Gunshots into Estranged Wife's Home
Investigators learned that John Goodner had allegedly been stalking and threatening his estranged wife since their separation.

A retired Hercules police officer is facing attempted murder charges after he allegedly shot into his estranged wife’s house in Antioch last month, police said today. John Goodner, 47, of Antioch, pleaded not guilty on Feb. 11 to charges of attempted murder, shooting into an occupied dwelling, terrorist threats and stalking, according to the district attorney’s office.
Hercules police Detective Connie Van Putten said Goodner was hired in October 1994 and retired in March 2009. She declined to comment on his arrest. On Jan. 28 at 2:03 a.m., police officers heard gunshots in the area of West 18th and A streets, police said. While trying to find the source of the gunfire, the officers received a call from the department’s dispatch center that a woman had just reported someone fired gunshots into her bedroom. The woman was asleep at the time and was not injured by the gunfire, police said. She reportedly told police she believed her estranged husband was responsible, police said.
The officers went to Goodner’s home in the 800 block of Putnam Street, but police said Goodner did not immediately come out of the house or comply with the officers’ commands. Police said he was eventually taken into custody with the help of a police dog. Investigators later learned that Goodner had allegedly been stalking and threatening his estranged wife since their separation.
