Richmond Man Arrested on Suspicion of Assaulting Taxi Driver

Kion Penny, 22, is also considered a person of interest in a string of three robberies on Monday night, according to police.

Police arrested a Richmond man on Monday on suspicion of assault with a deadly weapon after he allegedly fired a handgun at a taxi driver, police said today. Kion Penny, 22, is also considered a person of interest in a string of three robberies on Monday night, some of which involved a man using a gun to beat victims, Richmond police said.

Officers arrested Penny just before 10 p.m. Monday after he allegedly shot at a taxi driver in the 200 block of 26th Street. Police said the taxi driver was not injured and called police to report the assault. Richmond police Sgt. Nicole Abetkov said police have not been able to tie Penny to the robberies, but said he is a person of interest in the case.

“As far as the other three robberies go, he will be looked at as a potential suspect, but he hasn’t been arrested for that as of yet,” Abetkov said. Abetkov said two people suffered injuries Monday night in three separate robberies near the Richmond BART station. Both were transported to the hospital and released the same evening, Abetkov said.
