Richmond Man Killed in Crash During Wet Weather Saturday

Fire crews used special tools to extricate the driver and at least one of the other two passengers from the car.

A 20-year-old man was killed and his two passengers were seriously injured in a solo car crash on a wet roadway in Richmond on Saturday night, a police spokeswoman said today. The wreck occurred around 10:45 p.m. Saturday on Richmond Parkway near the Giant Highway exit, Richmond police Sgt. Nicole Abetkov said.

The driver, later identified as Misael Quintero of Richmond, was killed and his two passengers were taken to hospitals with serious injuries, according to police and a Contra Costa County coroner’s deputy. Abetkov said Quintero was driving south on Richmond Parkway south of the Giant Highway exit when he lost control of the car, which overturned and came to rest against a tree. Fire crews used special tools to extricate Quintero and at least one of the other two passengers from the car.

Quintero died at the scene while both passengers have since been released from the hospital. Abetkov said police do not know whether drugs or alcohol were factors in the crash but that it appears Quintero was driving above the 50 mph speed limit. Richmond Parkway includes several curves in the roadway that require cautious driving, especially in wet weather, she said.

“You have to abide by the posted speed limits, because they’re put there for a reason,” Abetkov said. “It’s unfortunate that this happened, because this young man died as a result.”
