Police are asking for the public’s assistance in identifying a burglary suspect that was captured by a surveillance camera inside a Hercules home on Wednesday afternoon.

Hercules police said officers were initially dispatched at 12:24 p.m. to reports of a security alarm’s activation at a home in the 100 block of Ash Court. Officers later discovered that the home had been burglarized on Oct. 21, and had just recently installed an alarm and a surveillance system, according to police.

Responding officers were advised the homeowner was at work, but was monitoring the surveillance video from his cellphone. The homeowner said someone had entered the home and made off with jewelry.

Officers observed that two windows were open in the home, police said. They determined that the suspect had fled.

A perimeter was established, and a canine unit was called in. A Richmond police canine and a handler arrived at around 1:08 p.m., according to police. The canine tracked the suspect over a back fence, onto Redwood Road, but eventually lost the trail.

Police describe the suspect as a black man with a thin build, between 18 and 20 years old. The man, who may have a goatee, was wearing a blue V-neck shirt with a white shirt underneath it, police said, and had white shoes and a beanie-style hat.
