A civil grand jury warns that overtime and vacancies are creating safety risks and urges better pay and recruiting, with the sheriff and Board of Supervisors required to respond by late June and July.
   

• 5-year-old dies after SUV crashes into American River near Placerville, CHP says (abc10.com) — A deadly crash on Highway 50 just east of Ice House Road sent an SUV into the American River near Placerville, killing a 5-year-old boy and an adult woman, according to CHP. Another child was seriously hurt and the driver had minor injuries as investigators work to determine what caused the vehicle to leave the roadway.
   

• Ultimate Sprint Car Series and 305 Sprint Cars Take On Bakersfield Speedway May 30th (speedwaydigest.com) — A standout Northern California sprint car driver recently swept a full racing weekend in Placerville, and now many of those same competitors are heading to Bakersfield Speedway on May 30. The Ultimate Sprint Car Series and California 305 Sprint Series will headline a multi-division show, with detailed gate times, ticket prices, and a full 2026 schedule already set.
