Assistance League® Diablo Valley is a nonprofit, member volunteer organization dedicated to improving lives in our community through hands-on programs primarily funded by the Assistance League Thrift Shop, located next to the Park Theater in Lafayette.

Established in 2012, Assistance League of Diablo Valley’s Community Programs include 8 programs that meet a range of needs. Food Boxes, chaired by Janet Venturino, consists of members who selected such shelf stable items as canned vegetables, canned fruit, canned tuna, pasta, chili, peanut butter and jelly and cereal. Everyday needs such as laundry detergent, dish soap and toothpaste completed the inventory. Once delivered to the Assistance League Offices in Walnut Creek, its large conference room became an assembly line workplace, where member volunteers did their magic.

On Thursday, July 17, Community Partners from Wells Fargo Bank reported for duty by filling boxes with the abovementioned items. Ms. Venturino explained that from that day forward, the months of July and August would no longer be food insecure, in that additional funding for the Food Boxes financed those months.

The next phase, distribution, engaged the Contra Costa County Service Integration Program that, with the help of CAL WORKS, delivered 60 filled boxes to North Richmond and Pittsburg. The entire process went beyond providing food and household products to families in need; it celebrated a community awareness and support that nurtured at a deeper level.
