Big Rig Crashes Into Sunol Creek: CHP

SUNOL, CA — A big rig crashed into a creek near Sunol Tuesday, causing minor injuries and a roughly five-hour road closure, according to the California Highway Patrol.

At 1:51 p.m. Tuesday, a truck driving down Niles Canyon Road lost control and veered off the roadway into the creek, according to a CHP social media post. The driver said that a tire blew out, causing him to lose control and veer off the road, according to CHP Officer Tyler Hahn.

Photos shared by CHP show crews using a heavy-duty crane to hoist the badly damaged cab back onto the roadway. The flatbed trailer was also pulled up from the embankment. Other CHP photos show a shattered windshield, extensive front-end damage, and substantial damage to the cab.

A SigAlert was issued on SR-84, and the road was closed between Mission Boulevard in Fremont and Main Street in Sunol between 2 and 7 p.m.

The driver suffered minor injuries, according to CHP.
