Diesel Spill, Big-Rig Pileup Snarls I-580 Traffic

Two trucks, six cars, and diesel spill led to major closures of I-580 throughout Tuesday night and Wednesday morning.

Initial reports indicated that two semi-trucks and six vehicles were involved. One of the semi-trucks jackknifed, and blocked all lanes at one point. At least one vehicle was pinned under the truck, while another vehicle was reported smoking.

DUBLIN, CA — The on-ramp of I-580 westbound at Foothill Road remains closed Wednesday morning following a multi-vehicle crash that included 2 semi-trucks, six vehicles, and a diesel spill.

On Tuesday at around 7:48 p.m., a multi-vehicle crash was reported on westbound I-580 near the I-680/Foothill-San Ramon Road area, according to a California Highway Patrol log. Initial reports indicated that two semi-trucks and six vehicles were involved. One of the semi-trucks jackknifed, and blocked all lanes at one point. At least one vehicle was pinned under the truck, while another vehicle was reported smoking.

At 8:39 p.m., fire crews arrived to handle the spill of approximately 100 gallons of diesel fuel onto the roadway, according to CHP. At around 8:40 p.m., all westbound lanes and the on-ramp from San Ramon were closed as crews spent the night cleaning.

By 6:03 a.m. Wednesday, all vehicles were cleared from the roadway, though the right lane of westbound I-580 was closed as of 8 a.m. as crews continue to clean up the diesel.

Only minor injuries were reported, according to CHP.
