This book drive is held in support of “Rheumatic Relief Samoa”
The mission of Rheumatic Relief (RR) is to reduce the burden of childhood rheumatic heart disease through echocardiographic Screening & Follow-up. Rheumatic Heart Disease (RHD) is a chronic, progressive disease that is preventable with antibiotics.
Samoa records one of the highest rates of RHD in the world, approximately 14% higher than neighboring countries. The exact reason for this is unknown. For several years a team of heart surgeons from Utah, students from BYU, echo techs from the Mayo clinic, genetic researchers from Oxford and other medical staff lead a collaborative effort to early detection of the disease, treatment and education. https://youtu.be/EdndKPMBhe0
