Bicycling, a Simple Basic Healthy Cardiovascular Activity, has Morphed into a "Me First, Out of My Way" Aggresive Activity

A lot of bicyclists today are clearly arrogant and narcissistic with their attitudes and behavior when on the bike, violating vehicle code.

Backing out of my driveway a few days ago, I paused at the sidewalk to look in each direction for traffic before entering Muirwood Drive. I could see a cyclist coming down the grade about four hundred feet away, well before the stop sign at Eastwood Court. There was no traffic from the other direction. I looked again in the direction of the cyclist still well in front of the stop sign at Eastwood Court. I proceded backing out into the street. With the rear end of my car facing Eastwood Court, I placed the gear into drive to proceed forward when all of a sudden there was an adult female on a bicycle at my driver's side door. She yelled an expletive at me. She was the cyclist coming down the grade. She did not stop at the stop sign at Eastwood Court. She was yelling an expletive at me because she wrongly believed that I was in her way. Her aggressive behavior by way of not stopping at the stop sign at Eastwood Court and yelling an expletive at me exemplifies what a lot of cyclists are all about today. That same day (June 08, 2011), there was a story on the CBS SanFrancisco.com website reporting, "Bicyclist struck by car after running red light in San Francisco." There were eleven comments by readers regarding the story. All eleven comments were negative comments about the cyclist. The police officer on the scene, Sgt. Michael Andraychak, said, "He was described as traveling at a high rate of speed, swerving in and out of lanes." I was an avid cyclist for many years, competed in numerous events — stage racing over the many Continental Divides in Colorado, Biathlon events (Run-Bike-Run) around the country with numerous hours training for those events, two hundred miles each week on the bike and running hills fifty miles each week. I always stopped at stop signs and red lights when on the bike as did my friends and teammates. We followed all laws when on our bikes and were courteous to all other vehicles on the road as well as all pedestrians. A lot of bicyclists today are clearly arrogant and narcissistic with their attitudes and behavior when on the bike, violating vehicle code. A lot of cyclists today clearly exhibit their capacity for stupidity, their capacity to be reckless and dangerous toward the safety and health of others and themselves, and by way of their actions demonstrate their inability to have an intelligent, safe and healthy experience when riding the bike.
