Patch Blogger Volunteers to Be a Crossing Guard After Van and Child on Bicycle Collide

"If PUSD will give me the necessary tools, I will go into that intersection as a crossing guard on a volunteer basis until the new traffic signals are operational."

Friday morning at about 7:20 a.m., a 10-year-old fourth-grade student cyclist collided with a van in the crosswalk at Muirwood Drive and West Las Positas Boulevard.

The driver of the van did not see the student. Fortunately the student's injuries were superficial. The did not receive a call on the incident.

The Muirwood Drive and West Los Positas intersection is under heavy construction at this time due to the new traffic signal project, which is supposed to be complete by November.

The heavy construction activity is adding to the chaos that is a already a daily problem in this intersection.  Teachers at Lydiksen Elementary, where the student goes to school, contacted several people asking that a crossing guard be put in place for the remainder of the construction and were rebuffed. The question threw back at the teacher — Who is going to pay for the guard?

I believe a lot of us knew there was going to be an incident in this intersection sooner then later.
