Pleasanton K9 Police Force Gearing up to Sniff out Drugs on PUSD High School Campuses
I wonder if the searches will include teacher parking and related facilities? After all, there was a teacher arrested this school year for drugs.
The Pleasanton Unified School District Trustees voted in the last meeting unanimously to approve the utilization of canine services to sniff for drugs at local schools.
A board policy will be written and will be brought to the board for a first reading at the Feb. 14 meeting and for a second reading and possible adoption at the Feb. 28 meeting. No action will be taken on canine searches until the new board policy is approved.
The Pleasanton K9 police force dogs are German Shepherd and Dutch Shepherd, are specifically trained to recognize marijuana, methamphetamine, cocaine, ecstay and heroin. The dogs cannot detect alcohol.

Student suspensions for alcohol use was 44 percent of all substance abuse suspensions for school year 2009 - 2010, 28 percent for school year 2010 - 2011 and 35 percent of substance related suspensions thus far for school year 2011 - 2012.
I had a question for Lt. Rohovit who heads up the K9 police force but he did not return my phone call prior to this post. But, I believe the dogs also do not detect prescription narcotics such as Vicodin, demerol, Percodan, Oxycontin and Morphine.

The PUSD is looking into other means for detecting alcohol among the students and its presence on high school campuses. There is a rather wide assortment of electronic gadgets currently on the market that they may be able to utilize.
Also, put into the board meeting minutes "an important component of the program" is communication and evaluation, school staff will clearly communicate to their students, parents, and the school community that, with authorization, the program will be implemented.
Students will be informed through bulletin notification, and class discussions. Parents will be informed through newsletter notification and parent forums.
