City Council Approves Money to Design Veterans Memorial

The memorial is meant to pay respect to veterans for their service and sacrifice, according to city officials.

City council members Tuesday unanimously approved $28,000 for the drawings needed to build a veteran’s memorial at Pleasanton Pioneer Cemetery, city officials said. The memorial is meant to pay respect to veterans for their service and sacrifice, according to city officials.

The final design will have seven monoliths and seven flagpoles, each representing a branch of the military, city officials said. The final design will have a prisoner of war/missing in action flag, an American flag, a granite platform, a bronze sculpture of a kneeling soldier, benches and a granite star, according to city officials.

The memorial is part of the Pioneer Cemetery Master Plan, approved last year, city officials said. After the Master Plan was developed, a group of veterans formed to support the construction of a memorial and committed themselves to paying for all of the “above-ground” costs of the memorial, according to city officials.
