Information Night for Families of Adults with Developmental Disabilities

The free event, open to Tri-Valley residents, is on October 2 at the Pleasanton Senior Center.

In observance of National Disability Employment Awareness Month in October, the City of Pleasanton will host a free Transition Information Night for families of Tri-Valley young adults with developmental disabilities. 

The event is scheduled on Wednesday, October 2, 2013 from 5:30 to 8:00 p.m. at the Pleasanton Senior Center, 5353 Sunol Boulevard.

Free child care is available during this event. Please request child care no later than September 26 by calling (925) 931-5367 or email pdeaton@cityofpleasantonca.gov.

Participants can attend optional free presentations during the evening including “Ready, Set…Transition!” led by Gina Gourley, who had a 25-year career in special education with the Pleasanton Unified School District. Gourley has personally experienced the challenges of transitioning a young adult with disabilities and serves on the boards of several non-profits which serve the developmentally disabled.

In response to last year’s request for additional information on housing options, a panel of housing professionals will provide current information on the variety of living models and supports available for persons with developmental disabilities. Speakers at this session will include Janice Ochoa, a case manager from Regional Center of the East Bay, Julie Testa from REACH, Brianna Steinhauser from Housing Consortium of the East Bay and Tony Green from Bethesda Lutheran Communities. Topics to be covered include independent and supported living, group homes, shared housing, family homes and California Legacy Homes.

All presentations will be held twice during the event, and are scheduled at 6:30 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. 

The event will also feature information tables with representatives from agencies which provide post high school services such as independent and supported living services, social/recreation programs, adult day programs, transportation/paratransit, self-advocacy support, as well as information on conservatorship, special needs trusts and benefits counseling.

The event is co-sponsored by Tri-Valley REACH, the Alameda County Developmental Disabilities Council and the Pleasanton Unified School District WorkAbility Program.
