Construction Will Close Calaveras Road for Two Months

The road will be closed between Geary Road and the Alameda County border, Monday through Friday, starting Monday and continuing through June 8.

Bay City News — Calaveras Road in Alameda County will be closed weekdays for the next two months due to construction work on the Calaveras Dam.

The road will be closed between Geary Road and the Alameda County border, Monday through Friday, starting Monday and continuing through June 8, according to the San Francisco Utilities Commission.

The road will be closed to allow large hauling to trucks to transport approximately 300,000 cubic yards of sands and gravel to the construction site.

The trucks cannot safely share the narrow and winding road with private vehicles and bicycles, according to utilities commission spokeswoman Betsy Rhodes.

A second, longer closure of 18 months will also take place next year.

The Calaveras Dam is considered seismically vulnerable and is being rebuilt as part of a $4.6 billion program of seismic and reliability upgrades to the Hetch Hetchy Water System, which is operated by the commission. The reconstructed dam will restore the Calaveras Reservoir to its original storage capacity, Rhodes said.
