Crews Extinguish 242-Acre Altamont Pass Fire

Firefighters put out a 242-acre vegetation fire this afternoon near the Altamont Pass in Alameda County, according to a Cal Fire official.

Cal Fire Division Chief Jim Crawford said firefighters got a call just after 10 a.m. about a fire in the windmill area of the Altamont Pass, west of Christensen Road. About 10 minutes later they got a report of another fire near the Altamont Landfill, just north of Altamont Pass Road, Crawford said.

It turns out the two calls were about the same fire, and crews were attacking it from two directions, Crawford said.

Crawford said firefighters stopped the fire from spreading beyond 242 acres at 12:30 p.m. and crews had it under control or out by 4:30 p.m. The fire did not injure anyone or damage any property.

No structures were threatened, Crawford said. Crawford said the cause of the fire is still under investigation.
