Dog Day Cabernet Goes Bigger, Pleasanton's Valley Humane Benefits

Valley Humane Society forged a partnership with Livermore's Darcie Kent Vineyards to benefit local pets, and now Costco's in too.

PLEASANTON, CA — Animal lovers who enjoy a good bottle of wine have reason to celebrate opening their pocketbooks when shopping at Costco. Pleasanton-based Valley Humane Society has forged a partnership with Livermore's Darcie Kent Vineyards to benefit local dogs and cats. For each bottle of DKV's Dog Day Cabernet sold, Valley Humane will receive $5.

It's not exactly a new thing: Over the last three vintages, the winery has donated $5 for every bottle sold of Dog Day Cabernet. But now the red wine has wider distribution at eight Northern California Costco stores.

Dog Day Cabernet was created after Valley Humane Society helped a mother cat and two kittens Darcie Kent found in her vineyard.

“I was so impressed with their programs, how they serve the community and our animal friends, that I wanted to do something that could help in a big way,” Kent said of the work Valley Humane Society does.

The distinctive red label on Dog Day Cabernet features Kent's faithful and beloved Shepherd, Brunello, and the Valley Humane Society logo, so it's an easy-to-spot “bottle that benefits.” Proceeds from the wine's sales have a great impact on Valley Humane Society’s ability to serve animals and members of the community, according to the organization, which relies on private donations from individuals and businesses to fund its programs and services.

“People often assume a connection between the national groups and their smaller humane societies, but in fact Valley Humane Society is supported exclusively by our local community,” said Melanie Sadek, executive director at VHS.

Costco stores in Livermore, Danville, Concord, Fremont, Tracy, Manteca, Almaden and Santa Clara are now carrying the playful cabernet sauvignon for enjoyment by pet lovers and wine lovers alike.
