NATIONAL NIGHT OUT 2011: Rally Your Neighbors for a Night Out Against Crime
Tuesday, August 2, 2011, marks the 28th anniversary of National Night Out. The event, traditionally held the first Tuesday in August, began as a concept for generating greater crime prevention involvement among residents. In the past, residents would leave their porch lights on to demonstrate their anti-crime stance. Today, residents organize:
- Block parties
- Community service events (such as a park clean-up)
- Contests
- Cookouts
- Festivals
- Neighborhood walks
- Parades
- Rallies
Residents interested in participating can download
an application at www.pleasantonpd.org, or pick one up in
the front lobby of the Pleasanton Police Department (4833
Bernal Avenue). The deadline to apply is July 27.

The Pleasanton Police Department began participating in National Night Out more than a decade ago with four neighborhood block parties. Since then, the local program has expanded to 38 block parties, most of which
are hosted by organized Neighborhood Watch groups throughout the city. Parties vary from potlucks and barbecues to ice cream socials and have included live bands, bounce houses, kid’s activities and closed-off street parties.
Parties registered with the police may be visited by
members of the Pleasanton Police Department, the Mayor, City Council, City Manager, City department heads or members of the Livermore-Pleasanton Fire Department.
