The Pleasanton Police Department will partner with the U.S. Department of Justice Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) to host a free prescription drug drop-off in conjunction with the National Take Back Initiative.
The event, scheduled on Saturday, April 30, from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m., encourages residents to drop off unused and expired prescription drugs at the Pleasanton Police station lobby, located at 4833 Bernal Avenue (on the back side of the Pleasanton Public Library).
According to a national survey conducted in 2009 by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Administration, more than seven million Americans currently abuse prescription drugs. Each day, approximately 2,500 teens use prescription drugs to get high for the first time, according to the Partnership for a Drug Free America. Studies show that a majority of abused prescription drugs are obtained from family and friends, including the home medicine cabinet.
In an effort to address these alarming statistics, the DEA and local police departments across the nation are hosting safe and responsible drug drops to provide citizens with a safe and environmentally friendly way to dispose of unused pharmaceutical drugs.
