Girl, 8, Killed In Crash On I-680 Near Sunol: CHP

The California Highway Patrol closed several lanes following the fatal collision. The cause is under investigation.

ALAMEDA COUNTY, CA — A young girl was killed on Interstate Highway 680 near Sunol early Friday morning when the car she was riding in was struck from behind, California High Patrol officials said. The fatal crash was reported on northbound Interstate Highway 680 near Calaveras Road at about 12:20 a.m.

The CHP said a driver in a Dodge failed to slow down for a Caltrans lane closure, hitting a white Toyota from behind and pushing it into a Ford. The Dodge overturned during the crash, seriously injuring the Toyota driver and killing the 8-year-old Martinez girl seated in the back. The Toyota driver and the passenger were both taken to Eden Medical Center in Castro Valley.

The occupants of the Dodge and the Ford were not injured during the collision. The wreck prompted CHP to close three lanes of traffic for several hours due to the investigation. The Livermore-Pleasanton Fire Department responded to assist.
