Host Families in Tri-Valley Urgently Needed for Exchange Students

The East Bay-based study abroad program has struggled to find hosts this season.

Six full-time families and six part-time families are still needed to host high school students visiting the Tri-Valley from the Basque area of Spain this month.

Pleasanton-based Edu-Culture Immersion, a study abroad organization that creates and implements language-based study abroad programs for students in the U.S. and Europe, is searching to find enough host families for their Tri-Valley program this season.

The students, who arrive in California on June 27, range from 14 years to 17 years of age.

"Students bring their own spending money and are insured," ECI representative Siu Ginn said. "Families provide a private bed, three meals a day, transportation to BART stations and a welcoming space for students to experience our way of life."

Ginn said the students stay with the host family between two to four weeks, working to improve their conversational English skills as they learn about our culture and share theirs with their host families.

According to Ginn, the program provides daily activities for the students. Host families are welcome to join the group as they explore San Francisco, Berkeley, Santa Cruz and participate in fun local activities, as well. Most of the activities leave from the Tri-Valley area.

"Weekends and evenings are time for the students to spend time with their host families," Ginn said.
