Local Rotarians Pack Meals for Kids Against Hunger

In support of Hunger Action Month, 131 volunteers from nine local Rotary clubs gathered in Pleasanton Sept. 25 to pack 37,872 meals for Kids Against Hunger, Bay Area, a regional office for the global nonprofit charity.

The event was sponsored by Area 4 of Rotary District 5170 with participation from Rotary clubs in Castro Valley, Dublin, Hayward, Livermore, Pleasanton, and San Leandro. The community service project followed the Rotary International theme of “Serve to Change Lives” for 2021-2022.

Volunteers worked in eight-to-10 person teams, assembly line style, to mix dry ingredients, consisting of rice, soy, dehydrated vegetables, and vitamins, in packages with each containing six nutritionally balanced meals. Each meal has as much brain- and muscle-building protein as a three ounce steak, according to Sherri Leal, executive director at Kids Against Hunger, Bay Area.

Kids Against Hunger, Bay Area packages and ships meals for distribution to hungry children in developing countries and the U.S. It also provides meals to food distribution programs in Haitian schools and to the Convoy of Hope, a charity that provides emergency food relief to the U.S. and 126 other countries.

Rotary International is a global community service organization with 1.2 million members dedicated to promoting peace, fighting disease, and solving their community’s and the world’s most persistent problems. Area 4 is affiliated with Rotary District 5170 of San Jose and its 61 chapters mainly in the East and South Bay.
