PLEASANTON, CA — The city of Pleasanton has relaunched its Facebook account and started a brand-new Instagram account after its previous Facebook account was compromised in December.

The city’s old account was compromised Dec. 28, and while no posts were made, years of content were deleted, according to spokesperson Heather Tiernan. Staff determined that the best way to move forward was to relaunch the page. The old page is still up, but the city has reported it to Facebook and asked that it be deactivated. No culprit has been found, Tiernan said.

The former page had roughly 6,000 subscribers before the hack, according to Tiernan. The city’s Twitter/X page remains unaffected.

The city also launched a new Instagram page that “aims to digitally engage with additional segments of the population that may not be active on its other platforms,” according to an email from Tiernan.

“We’ve been discussing adding a City Instagram account for some time, and our current situation was a good opportunity to relaunch our social media presence and add Instagram to our communications tool box,” she said.

In November, the city debuted a new municipal website providing improved aesthetics, easier navigation, and a layout that better adapts to desktops, tablets, and smartphones.
