Pleasanton Leaders To Discuss Stoneridge Mall Future

PLEASANTON, CA — Pleasanton residents are invited to attend a special joint meeting between the Pleasanton City Council and the Pleasanton Planning Commission to review the Stoneridge Mall Framework draft concept scenarios. The council is working with city staff and mall owners to develop policy guidance and a conceptual land plan for future development and potential redevelopment of the mall.

The council has been working with the planning commission, city staff, mall owners, and the public since August. Since the Draft Housing element is considering approving between 900 and 1,400 housing units near the Stoneridge Mall, the council hopes to incorporate the completed framework into its Housing Element, scheduled to be completed no later than Jan. 31, 2023.

Like many brick-and-mortar retail centers, the 1.3 million-square foot, 75-acre mall has faced challenges in recent years, including the closing of Sears and Nordstrom. A development agreement between the City and the Simon Property Group, set to expire in December 2023, allows for 362,700 more square feet to be built, according to stoneridgemallframework.com.

In September, the council approved a framework draft goal statement that envisioned a “new district which functions as an integrated, sustainable neighborhood [that] is well-connected to and through the site for walking, biking and transit, and offers a range of high-quality public and private gathering spaces, open space, and amenities.”

During a Sept. 26 public meeting, the public suggested a number of potential uses, including:

• A grocery store
• Outdoor gathering spaces
• A new hotel of up to 120 rooms
• New mixed-use retail/active use/open space areas, such as ground floor retail in multi-story residential buildings, or smaller shops along internal streets and open spaces

The meeting will take place at 7 p.m. on Thursday, Dec. 15. It will be livestreamed on the city’s YouTube page, on Tri-Valley TV’s channels 28, 29, 30 or on Zoom.
