Pleasanton Nonprofit Seeks Volunteers to Support Cancer Patients

The Sandra J. Wing Healing Therapies Foundation is looking for volunteers to fill flexible, remote roles.

The Sandra J. Wing Healing Therapies Foundation is recruiting volunteers to help support and connect with cancer patients in the community. This volunteer opportunity is remote and has a flexible time commitment of approximately one to two hours per month, plus three video conference meetings per year.

Established in Pleasanton in 2008, the Sandra J. Wing Healing Therapies Foundation has issued more than 1600 grants to help local cancer patients access five complementary healing therapies: acupuncture, acupressure, guided/visual imagery, deep breathing meditation, and therapeutic massage. As the organization’s founder, Sandra Wing, experienced firsthand during her cancer journey, these therapies can help alleviate the toxic side effects of chemotherapy and radiation.

Everyone who receives a grant from the foundation has an assigned Care Team volunteer. Care Team volunteers check in regularly (usually once a month) by phone or email to answer questions about the foundation’s services and provide support and encouragement. Since expanding to serve all of Alameda and Contra Costa counties, the foundation has seen a significant increase in the number of grants awarded, and the need for volunteers has increased accordingly.

Serving on the Care Team offers a way to make a direct impact in the local community. Christine T. of Danville wrote appreciatively of her Care Team volunteer: “You were always there often anticipating the next moves, checking in on my mental health and health in general. You were amazing.”

Giving back provides volunteers with a sense of fulfillment as well. Longtime volunteer Elaine H. of Pleasanton says, “Knowing that I can be of help, and additionally, develop meaningful relationships along the way has been very rewarding to me personally.”
