Police Warn Pleasanton Residents of Latest Scam

Callers are being told they need to pay as a result of missing jury duty.

PLEASANTON, CA —The Pleasanton Police Department is alerting residents to an old Bay Area phone scam that has recently resurfaced in Pleasanton.

Police said the scammers call residents claiming to be from the Alameda County Sheriff’s Office to notify the caller that they missed jury duty. The caller, who identifies himself as a lieutenant, asks for money over the phone to keep the court from issuing an arrest warrant.

“This is an old scam that has been used for quite some time,” Alameda County Sheriff’s Sergeant Ray Kelly said. “The Sheriff's Office does not call people who miss jury duty nor do we threaten payment or arrest. Please call us if you have any questions or concerns. Protect yourself by being cautious and suspicious of strangers who call you on the phone.”
