You may have suddenly seen the purple ribbons while driving around Pleasanton and wondered what they symbolize. If you look closer, you will see they are a sign that the Relay for Life race is coming to town.
Relay for Life will be at on July 21 at 10:00 a.m.
Relay for Life is a fundraiser that raises money for cancer and cancer research.
According to Nancy denBroeder, Friday was "Paint the Town Purple" in Pleasanton.
"Volunteers for the American Cancer Society's Pleasanton Relay for Life will be downtown between 4 and 6pm decorating with purple ribbons and bows...the internationally known color for Relay for Life," denBroeder wrote. "We want everyone to see purple and celebrate those that have battled cancer, remember those lost to cancer and fight back against a disease that robs us of so much. Our Relay for Life is on Saturday, July 21...begins at 10am and is a 24-hour event that touches the community and is open to all."
According to the Relay for Life website, the race was started in 1985 by Dr. Gordy Klatt, a colorectal surgeon.
The site reads, "Relay For Life is a life-changing event that helps communities across the globe celebrate the lives of people who have battled cancer, remember loved ones lost and fight back against the disease."
