Supervisor Scott Haggerty Helps Tri-­‐Valley ROP Nursing Careers Program

Alameda County Supervisor Scott Haggerty in these tough economic times was able to secure $36,000 in County funds to allow the Tri-­‐Valley Regional Occupational Program to continue providing medical occupational courses to Tri-­‐Valley high school students.

“Working with the Alameda County Health Care Services Agency I was able to secure funds to address an important educational need in the Tri-­‐Valley. The health care industry continues to grow in the Bay Area and it’s important that we give young people an opportunity to be exposed to different career paths”, said Supervisor Scott Haggerty.

The Tri-­‐Valley ROP Nursing Careers Program is an introduction to the field of Nursing and an integral course in our Medical Occupations pathway. Studies include an understanding of the systems of the body with associated medical terminology and diseases, basic patient care, taking vital signs, charting, medical ethics as well as understanding patient privacy laws. Students learn about the various nursing specialties while studying the care of patients and the role nurses provide in a variety of healthcare settings.

“The Nursing Program introduces students to the expanding health care field while giving them the skills and confidence to work in a hospital and clinic setting”, said Haggerty.

There are 31 students currently enrolled in the ROP Nursing Careers Program for the 2012-­‐2013 school year. The program is attended by students from the five comprehensive high schools in the Tri-­‐Valley. The cost of the program is approximately $36,000 which includes the teacher’s salary and instructional supplies.

The Nursing Program provides students the opportunity to build partnerships within the healthcare community and establishes the possibility of future employment after their post-­‐secondary education to make Tri-­‐Valley their home”, said Julie Duncan, Director of Tri-­‐Valley ROP.
