Woman Bitten, Puppy Dies Following Pit Bull Attack at Shadow Cliffs

A puppy died after it was attacked by a pit bull at Shadow Cliffs Regional Recreation Area in Pleasanton last Saturday, East Bay Regional Parks spokesperson Carolyn Jones said.

According to Jones, a volunteer was taking the dog for a walk on Jan. 31 when the attack occurred. Jones said the volunteer was also bitten during the incident when she tried to control the dog and stop the attack.

“The pit bull wasn’t hers – she was just giving it some exercise and assessing its behavior for possible adoption,” Jones said. “The pit bull was from an animal rescue outfit in Hayward (not sure the name). While on the walk (on leash), the pit bull lunged at a small dog that was with a family. The volunteer tried to control the pit bull and the dog turned and bit her.”

Pleasanton Police officials confirmed East Bay Regional Park Police responded to the attack. Jones said the owner of the injured dog took it to the vet, where it died.

“Hayward Animal Control is following up with the animal rescue group regarding the pit bull,” Jones. “They would be the agency that would issue any citations.”

Witnesses say the puppy was a yellow Labrador Retriever.
