Girls Lacrosse of Poway Asks Community for Donations Before Weekend Fundraiser
The Girls Lacrosse of Poway serves as the only source of funding for high school and middle school lacrosse teams.
Even with ever-increasing budget cuts, popular school sports like baseball and football have it relatively easy when it comes to funding. It’s sports newer to the West Coast, like lacrosse and field hockey, that have so far been left to fend for themselves.
“Lacrosse is one of the sports at that is not school funded,” said PHS mom Violette Jackson. “Therefore, a non-profit organization was formed by volunteer parents to hold many fundraisers during the year to cover program costs.”
She’s referring to Poway Girls Lacrosse, of which she is co-president with Michele Shoemaker. The organization works to provide middle and high school lacrosse players with essentials like JV and varsity uniforms, warm-up suits, backpacks and some goal and goalie equipment.

Jackson joined the non-profit four years ago because of daughter Jessica’s involvement in the sport. Despite the personal investment in lacrosse, Jackson says any organized sport is invaluable.
“I think all sports are important to play in high school to feel a part of the community and school,” Jackson said. “I think it develops team work, camaraderie. … The girls have been really supportive, being there for each other.”

Now, as they prepare for their fourth annual fundraising event on Saturday, April 14, Poway Girls Lacrosse is asking the community for similar support—in the form of tax-deductible donations for their silent auction.
“We’ll take anything,” Jackson said. “It could be gift certificates, baskets of some sort or anything.”
Tickets are $30 per person and the event begins at 7 a.m. at a private residence in Poway. To donate, or for ticket and location information, email Jackson at violette_jackson@yahoo.com or girlslacrosseofpoway@gmail.com.
